Visitors to North Shields Victorian Christmas Market can benefit from a free bus service courtesy of Nexus.

For the second year running, a London Routemaster bus will be in operation across the weekend of the market in Northumberland Square, on December 13 and 14 from 10.15am until 5pm.

It will connect the market with North Shields Metro station, the North Shields ferry landing and the Royal Quays shopping centre on Coble Dene Road.

The market is organised each year by a partnership including North Tyneside Council, North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Beacon Centre and local churches.

The Director General of Nexus, Bernard Garner, said: "I am delighted we are able to run this free bus service across the weekend of the Victorian Market, which promises to be a fabulous event in the run up to Christmas.

"The fact we have acquired a London bus to operate along the route makes it an attraction in itself and I have no doubt that families heading to the market will really enjoy taking a ride on board."

Cllr Eddie Darke, cabinet member for Safer and Active Communities, said: "This free bus is excellent news for visitors to North Shields Victorian Christmas Market.

"We’re grateful to Nexus for providing this service again. We hope it will encourage even more people to attend this fantastic event."

Around 100 stalls selling all manner of seasonal gifts, crafts and food will be there along with traditional entertainment including brass bands, carol singing, fairground rides and street entertainment.

In addition to the main entertainment activities, there will be ice sculpting demonstrations and additional events in the local library and churches.
